"Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil." John 12:1-3
For a long time Mary has kept that very costly oil at home and I truly believe that she had done that for a very special occasion too. Without a doubt that moment was more than special because she had The Lord Jesus at her house and besides Him she also had her brother Lazarus who was dead for four days and was brought back to life. Oh, what a day! We can imagine how joyful the whole family was by being together with The Lord Jesus. This is the joy we all have today when we are in the church seeking for His presence and serving Him because we were all spiritually dead and were resurrected. Today we are not in the tomb anymore but totally free.
Mary, by the way, decided to anoint Him with a very special fragrance and she did that with pleasure. It was her personal decision, she did that by her faith. Nobody knew that she had that special and costly oil at home and I do believe that she had been keeping it for that very specific moment. When the opportunity came she didn't hesitate in offering it to The Lord Jesus.
Everyone has something special to offer, to sacrifice to God. Either big or small, but we all can present something to please Him. Mary could have sold that perfume as Judas had suggested, and there's no doubt that she could have made some money, but could that money make her happy for the rest of her life? Definitely not. Because there are many rich people who are fully depressed, some have already killed themselves proving that their money never made them happy. But if they were filled with the presence of God, I'm quite sure that they wouldn't be depressed nor would they have killed themselves.
Dear friends, I honestly believe that you have already understood where I want to reach. You know very clearly what God really wants from you and what He wants no one knows that you have, but He does. God never ask from us what we are not able to give. Martha and Lazarus didn't know about that costly oil that Mary sacrificed to Him, but He knew that she had it at home. See that this is something that happened more than two thousand years ago, but till this day we have been talking about it. Do you know why? Because God doesn't forget those who sacrifice on the Altar. No matter how long it takes, He will always remember you. On the other hand, Judas became furious with that because his heart was very greedy and fully possessed, he didn't accept when Mary sacrificed that oil. There are many people who don't want you to sacrifice either, just because they are selfish and their heart is not in The Lord Jesus, but in the perishable things of this world. "But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, 'Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?'” John 12:4, 5
One day The Lord Jesus said to His disciples; "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Luke 12:34
